| Mantra has its roots in Vedic Hinduism, but was later adopted by many of the Eastern religions. The words or phrases are considered energy based sounds which produce specific vibrations. Each mantra has a purpose and can be used in several ways; for example chanting or silent repetition (japa). It is believed that using a specific mantra 108x per day for 40 days can bring about change or a shift (either emotional or physical) into one's life. Below you will find several mantras and their purpose. Click on the .wav file to hear an example. Each mantra has been chanted several times for you to hear. Please know you do not have to chant the mantras using the exact melodies below (once you have the phonetics down, you can adjust them to suit whatever melody you choose). Be sure to set a specific intention before you begin to use the mantras below or ask a certified yoga teacher for guidance. |
| Technique: Before you begin you may wish to do some yoga therein cleansing the body's energy channels: chakras, meridians and nadi. Sit for a few minutes watching your breath. Set a specific intention, be clear by telling the Universe exactly what you wish to see happen. Counting: Traditionally Mala beads were used (a strand of 108 beads strung by string into a necklace). Even if you don't have mala beads you can still use mantra. Have fun with it! Maybe even count on your fingers. Time: The first few times you work through the 108 it may feel like it takes forever, but before you know it you're speed will improve and you will be finished in no time. As far as the time of day goes, it is best to choose the same each day. Although, do not worry if you can not; just remember to do it! If you miss a day during the 40...start back at number 1! Finishing: When you are complete you may wish to sit or lie down for several minutes. Feel the mantra reverberating in your body. Revisit your intention visualizing the change you wish to occur. Visualize it as it is here NOW. Please keep in mind you do not have to be seated in lotus position to use mantra. You can use it anytime, anyplace. One of my favourite times is while driving! Namaste! |

| In his book Sâdhanâ, Srî Swâmi Shivânanda wrote:
"Of all the mantras, the supreme and the most potent power of powers is the great, glorious Gâyatrî Mantra. It is the support of every seeker after Truth who believes in its efficacy, power and glory, be he of any caste, creed, clime or sect. It is only one's faith and purity of heart that really count. Indeed, Gâyatrî is an impregnable spiritual armor, a veritable fortress, that guards and protects its votary, that transforms him into the divine, and blesses him with the brilliant light of the highest spiritual illumination. ... It is universally applicable, for it is nothing but an earnest prayer for Light, addressed to the Supreme Almighty Spirit. ... This single mantra, repeated sincerely and with clear conscience, brings the supreme good." |
